Melissa grew up in East Tennessee and moved to Boulder in 1977 to attend the University of Colorado, where she received her bachelor’s degree in anthropology. She returned to school and graduated from the University of Georgia in 1987 with a master’s degree in social work. Since that time she has worked in various capacities, both as an administrator and in direct client care, primarily in rural communities. Most notably, she helped start a battered women’s shelter in Athens, Georgia, and was instrumental in creating a community-based model for uninsured women to receive seamless access to free breast and cervical care in Colorado, which is now a part of the Susan G. Komen Foundation’s Metro Denver Affiliate and the State of Colorado’s Women’s Wellness Connection. Melissa has worked with the uninsured for over 20 years, and feels that health care is a right for all, not a privilege for some.
